Chapter 29

Mission Assessment

New Hope Town

Reports had begun coming in from the “bombers” as soon as they were within communications range of New Hope Town. The transports assigned targets in the West wasted no time returning to their stations in Villa De La Montana, West Hills and New Hope Town to resume their duties as emergency evacuation platforms or on patrol duty. The aliens had not been prepared to take advantage of their absence and within a few hours any opportunity to attack while the humans had no way to escape had evaporated.

Gavin Jamison and his staff went over the preliminary results of the missions flow by the Johannesburg, the Athens, the Paris and the Beijing as their reports began coming in the early hours of the morning New Hope Town time. For the Johannesburg, the Athens, and the Beijing the weather had been clear and their attached shuttles had been able to do recon flights over the targets immediately after the transports had finished their work. Rocky Point, the Beijing’s target, had been receiving heavy rain and strong winds from the storm pounding the southern coast and the transport’s cameras had been unable to record anything through the clouds covering the area.

That settlement however was near the western edge of the storm and Lieutenant Andrew Castor, the pilot of the shuttle attached to the Beijing for the mission, requested and was granted permission to return to the settlement and do a low flyby to try to record what had happened on the ground there. The aliens had not expected any aircraft to return and were not prepared when Castor and his flight engineer Staff Sergeant Sean Flaherty came in over the camps east of the settlement at just 100 feet. Even with the rain they were able to get a good look at the devastation on the ground there.

The reports from the transports in the East began coming in via the Australia before local midnight. Only the London which had flown through the worst weather had been unable to record the bombing run or make an assessment afterward with the exception of stating their belief that one of the alien airships on the ground at Southport must have exploded doing untold damage in the area at the top of the mesa where the landing field was. If this was so, it would mean that two alien airships had been destroyed; one had been caught on the ground at the staging area north of New Hope Town and while it had not exploded it had been fairly well crushed by the falling stones and would not be flying anywhere again.

The Intel specialists under Major Leclerc worked through the night trying to make a thorough assessment of the results of the bombing runs which were to be discussed at the staff meeting in the morning. The Regiment had already received the news about the Moscow from the starship Australia still up orbit above the planet almost daring the alien ships to come closer, something they did not choose to do.
